Kurinuki

Kurinuki is a Japanese term meaning ‘to hollow’.

Each piece starts as a solid block of clay, which is first hollowed out. The outside is then formed using a selection of tools to achieve various forms and different textures and effects. It's a slow and deliberate process and one that yields unique pieces that are really one-of-a-kind.

This way of making appeals to me as I am interested in the handmade form and the marks that making leaves behind. I enjoy the clear evidence of the maker and making, united in one form. The pieces are heavier than wheel-thrown items as the clay needs to be thicker in order to avoid cracking during firing. This means that the result is a piece that has real presence in your hand when you hold it. It feels solid and reliable and invites your trust and stability.
